Most of the Windows users remember the old System Recorder application. It's a program that can record sound that comes from the microphone or the line-in connector. But even though the program is extremely popular, it lacks a lot of features, one of them being the impossibility to use certain codecs or to change the audio quality settings. Besides that, this program cannot record the sound produced by certain applications, for example a radio player. Fortunately, there is a replacement for Sound Recorder and that's the program Total Recorder Standard Edition. As the name states, the software can record the sound coming from various sources, not just the microphone and line in and includes various options for customizing the recording.

Total Recorder Standard Edition is not just simple to use, it's also very simple to install and requires only a few clicks for completing this. Any version of Windows is supported by the program, like XP or Windows 7. The program takes about little hard disk space, about 5 MB of space.

The interface of Total Recorder Standard Edition includes a simple step by step wizard that allows the user to select the source for recording sound. The source can be a Windows media player, an external LP player or a microphone. After selecting the source, the user can move on to selecting the format of the file that will be recorded. The most important audio formats are supported by Total Recorder Standard Edition, like WMA, WAV or MP3. Besides that, every format has its own quality settings that can be configured.

The configuration of a recording can be also made by using the program's option section, not just by using the wizard. Still, this should be used by more experienced users. The professional version even allows recording video from various video sources, like YouTube, for example. The video recording feature is not available in the standard version. Total Recorder Standard Edition can schedule a recording to start at a certain time or day, thus allowing the user to record a radio show even if he's not in front of his computer.

It supports various audio sources for recording. Besides that, it features a simple step by step wizard that allows selecting the audio source and the audio format of the file that will be recorded. Furthermore, recordings can be scheduled to start at a certain time.

Cons:
Some configuration options regarding the recording process can give a hard time to beginners. Besides that, the video recording feature isn't available in the standard version.
